Famine and Hunger Strike

I find it funny (well not funny, more like sadly ironic) that there is a severe famine affecting millions of people in the East Africa, and at the same time in India there are thousands of protesters rallying against the government in support of an anti-corruption activist's hunger strike.

I don't know what it takes to solve the famine and I am not sure if anyone really has a solution. It is one thing to donate funds and send food for immediate relief, but we really need to fix the root cause and develop an infrastructure so that a drought would not cause so much strife to an entire region. I have heard stats that right now we have enough food to feed the entire world's population for 20 years. So the problem isn't the physical food; the problem is the distribution of food. With the advances in packaging, storage, refrigeration, canning and transportation I hope that some global aid organizations are able to partner with governments in famine stricken regions to develop a system to consistently deliver food. I hope that these organizations are able to build communities that aren't solely reliant on their local crops and livestock, but to empower and educate people so that they can offer skills and services to the local and global community.

As for the hunger strike in India, well that is for a good cause and I commend the protesters for being non-violent so far. It is truly amazing that the 74 year activist was able to empower and inspire so many followers, because I found it surprising that this tactic would be successful in this day and age. All the power to the people of India, and I hope that this leads to some positive changes and transparency in their parliament. I am sure there is corruption in governments all over the world, but that does not mean that the common people need to accept it.
