ANTM 8

Next Wednesday is the premiere of season 8 of ANTM. A lot of people complain that the show promotes low self esteem and eating disorders. But models are meant to be mannequins or clothes racks as opposed to being commercially beautiful women. That's why they are so skinny and tall. I guess Tyra is trying to throw in a few token "plus-size" models which is great for the show, since some of them are really gorgeous (I loved Toccara!), but it will take a while for the industry to change.

Celebrities, actors, and singers are better looking (I think) than models since they are styled to be marketed to the general public. They are more unique looking than models and come in more shapes and sizes. Anyone who watches TV can easily get depressed if they let themselves feel insufficient for not matching up to what they think the media dictates they should be. Image is definitely important - but it is more important on how you present yourself. There are so many hot people out there that are not really good looking - but just well put together.

Anyway, it's all junk for your mind. The same way gummy bears and marshmallows are junk for your stomach. America's Next Top Model is okay in small doses. And I can handle watching skinny girls for an hour a week - doesn't affect my self esteem. But American Idol, or Dancing With the Stars - that's a whole other story.
